Playing .flv files in Winamp
In order to get Winamp to
play flv files the nature of flv files must be
understood. The FLV, or Flash Video, format is a
file format essentially developed to supply to
user's video content via the internet. It found
its initial use as the major format utilized by
Macromedia Flash Player which has since become
Adobe Flash Player. Despite this, FLV still
sticks to certain video coding standards of
which the most common FLV standard is H.263.
Other standards include On2 TrueMotion VP6. Due
to this, in order to get any Media Player to be
able to play FLV files it is only required that
they be able to play the format in which said
videos are encoded in. The process for enabling
Winamp to play said formats will herein be
detailed.
Playing .flv files in Windows Media player
Once again, in order to get
Windows Media player to play flv files the
nature of flv files must be understood. The FLV,
or Flash Video, format is a file format
essentially developed to supply to user's video
content via the internet. It found its initial
use as the major format utilized by Macromedia
Flash Player which has since become Adobe Flash
Player. Despite this, FLV still sticks to
certain video coding standards of which the most
common FLV standard is H.263. Other standards
include On2 TrueMotion VP5 and On2 TrueMotion
VP5. Due to this, in order to get any Media
Player to be able to play FLV files it is only
required that they be able to play the format in
which said videos are encoded in. The process
for enabling Windows Media Player to play said
formats will herein be detailed.
The first task is to
dowload the utility named FFDshow, which can be
found here. Then, once downloaded, begin
installing it and when given a prompt to select
components make sure the VFW interface component
is ticked. Following this, a select additional
tasks option will arise. In this section, make
sure the following standards have a tick next to
them:
- FLV1, FLV4, H263
- FLV1, FLV4
- H263
- VP5, VP6
- Mp3
Following this, make sure that under the column with
the title Decoder and next to the above
mentioned video formats the option libavcodec is
selected. This may already have enabled a few
media players to play flv files, but more is
required for windows media player. You must
download an flv splitter, one entitled open
flv splitter can be found here. Install
this, which should be relatively simple, then
try running an FLV file using windows media
player. A prompt may arise stating that it is
not a supported media type and if you still wish
to play it, click yes. If all has worked Windows
Media player should now be playing flv files.
